Resuming school and class, rekindling enthusiasm for learning Chinese
—— Results from the Chinese Foods Festival Held by the CISDUS's Confucius Classroom at Banharn Jamsaiwittaya School 1
On July 1, most of the primary and secondary schools in Thailand ushered in the first day of the new semester postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The long-missed teachers and students could not hide their joy in the meeting, and the long-silent campus was filled with laughter. The CISDUS's Confucius Classroom at Banharn Jamsaiwittaya School 1 was even more colorful and thriving, because everyone knew that the most popular Chinese course was about to start, and interesting cultural experiencing activities were coming.
As time just entered the second week of the semester, the Confucius Classroom had held a series of activities focused on the "Using the Tongue to Feel China and the World" Chinese Foods Festival. The students would firstly watch a video introducing Chinese cuisine, and then make Chinese snacks such as candied haws and dumplings by themselves under the guidance of the teacher. While doing it, they should try to recall the relevant Chinese vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in class. Finally, each student should express his or her own feelings in Chinese. The Thai students, who we know would love to make things by themselves, had displayed a good command of making dumplings but a diverse level of speaking Chinese. Therefore, there were bursts of cheers at the event site for a while, and a pop of laughter for another, filling the place with as much joy as imaginable.
Organizing various cultural experience activities has always been a classic measure of the Confucius Classroom to promote Chinese teaching. This time, the Chinese Foods Festival has once again ignited the students' enthusiasm for learning Chinese and laid a solid foundation for improving the Chinese education level of Banharn Jamsaiwittaya School 1.
